Course of studies
First and second stage of studies
The basic studies cover three semesters, the main studies four semesters. At the end of each semester you will have to write exams to complete a course. The first stage of study is completed with the interim grade certificate.
Either the fourth or the fifth semester is an internship semester and emphasizes the practical relevance of the studies. Students carry out the internship at publishing houses, media agencies or in other organizations or companies in the field of media and information technology. Along with the many laboratories of this study program the internship semester deepens the theoretical knowledge and facilitates the entry into professional life.
The project thesis is carried out in the sixth semester (main studies). Within the scope of this work a team of at least three people works on a complex project. The project thesis provides the opportunity to apply the theoretical and practical knowledge the students have gained in their studies. Under professional conditions the students work on practice-oriented tasks. It is a good preparation for a future career in the media industry. Normally the project thesis takes place in the laboratories of the faculty. The students pass through all phases of a typical project, from conception through design, planning and production right up to the implementation on time.
The topics for the project thesis will be provided by the dean of the faculty during the first weeks of the semester. The proposals for the topics of the projects usually come from the professors of the faculty. Students may propose topics as well. Following the approval by the professors of the faculty these proposals can be added to the list of topics.
Students can start the project thesis after successfully finishing their basic studies, the internship semester and in the fifth semester at the earliest.
The students graduate with the Bachelor thesis. It is possible to work on the thesis either at university or in a media company. The goal of the Bachelor thesis is to work independently on a specific problem or a conceptual design and realization of a media project using scientific methods. Also part of the Bachelor thesis is a documentation of the work. This should cover all essential aspects of the work in accordance with scientific criteria.

The Bachelor thesis will be supervised by a professor as first adviser. The second adviser can be a professor, too. It is also possible to have an external advisor from a media company. It is important that the second adviser has at least the educational attainment the student aspires to have (in this case Bachelor of Science).
How to find a topic for the Bachelor thesis:
- The student can propose a topic to a professor (first adviser).
- A professor provides a topic and is searching for a suitable student.
- An external company provides a topic and is searching for a suitable student and a professor as first adviser.
The processing time for a Bachelor thesis is a maximum of four month. In special cases the processing time can be extended by 2 months, but only if an application is approved by the Chairman of the Audit Committee. Towards the end of the thesis there is a colloquium to present the results.
Precondition for starting a Bachelor thesis is that both the project thesis and the internship semester have been successfully completed.
To make sure that neccessary documents are available in time, those students who intend to continue immediately into a master program after finishing Bachelor degree should plan to finish the Bachelor thesis to the end of January or at the end of July.
